Well, he did try to to start a massive robot revolution in the first game... But moat of the hate for him is comedic relief.

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 27 points28 points  (1 child)

JUSTICE FOR CLAPTRAP 😭 if Salvador who has a LONG LONG LIST OF CRIMES can be a hero CLAPTRAP SHOULDN'T GET HATED ON

[–]narthon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No need to drag Salvador into this. My guess is that claptrap is in no way considered sentient. It is like a talking toaster. Obsolete formerly ubiquitous appliance.

[–]CarlRJ 38 points39 points  (9 children)

I like Claptrap a lot. He was amusing in BL1, BL2, and TPS. He was more annoying in BL3, but he was sorta Flanderized along with much of the rest of the cast.

[–]Adarapxam 4 points5 points  (3 children)

his VA got fired too iirc

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

For what?

[–]Adarapxam 2 points3 points  (1 child)

long story short is Randy the lead dev fires anyone that the community tends to like and inserts himself if he can. he did it to scooter in-between 1 and 2. technically speaking both dudes got accused of stuff but Randy himself has gotten a lot worse accusations but with actual physical evidence to back it up but nothing happened to him. also hes a magician.

[–]Siope_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did NOT do that to Scooter. His voice actor had a stroke between games, which is why he sounds different between them. They killed him off in Tales because he couldn't keep working as a voice actor for future games.

Perfect casting for the movie...Roland, not so much

[–]CarlRJ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I will wait at least until I see a trailer before starting to decide how well the movie is cast, and I won’t go in expecting the characters to match up with the ones from the games - I’ll judge based on whether the movie is an entertaining story, in and of itself.

[–]wrenchmonkey135 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Kevin Hart doesn't have the right stature to play Roland. They need someone like Idris Elba.

[–]CarlRJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to be making the mistake of thinking they’re doing a movie that exactly matches up with the games. They are not. Every “this person is too short” or “that person is too old” misses this. They’re free to reimagine the characters however they want. Roland could just as easily have been a 7 foot tall robotic teddy bear. We’re at least getting someone who vaguely resembles the character from the games in the most general details. Treat the movie as “a generic SciFi action thriller that vaguely reminds you of the Borderlands games” and you’ll be much less disappointed. As I said, I’ll judge the movie based on whether it’s is an entertaining story, in and of itself.

Long story short

BL1: clap trap start revolution that fails

BLTPS: shows that in the past with everyone, clap trap TRIES to go above and beyond with whatever task he's given but ends up actually making things way worse in the process. Also clap trap units are just generally annoying and "useless" in the verse

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 5 points6 points  (8 children)

Is b2 claptrap the same one as 1 or TPS or both?

[–]Huge-Insect-7759 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Um...BL1,2 and 3 is yes. I'm PRETTY SURE that it's the same in TPS cuz in BL2 clap trap was saying that Jack knew his weakness and a few other past details

[–]Odysseus_is_Ulysses 10 points11 points  (1 child)

TPS Fragtrap is our same Claptrap yes. At the end of the game he gets fucked up by Jack and thrown into the area our BL2 VH’s arrive at.

Jack removed his stair climbing wheel. Tragic.

[–]desrevermi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stairs?! NOOO! MY WEAKNESS!!!

[–]ValdraxNumbers, numbers, math-math-math. 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The Fyrestone Claptrap unit who greets you when you get off the bus in BL1 is the one tapped to be the Intergalactic Ninja Assassin Claptrap in the Robot Revolution DLC. That same unit is selected by Jack to become Fragtrap in TPS (and Shadowtrap from its DLC is the remnants of INAC in his code). The ending of TPS shows Jack shooting him, ripping out his stair-climbing wheel, and dumping him in the Winshear Waste where Sir Hammerlock repairs him, making him the only surviving Claptrap unit in BL2 and beyond.

[–]wrenchmonkey135 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Not entirely true. Side quests in 3 have you make another one: VR-0N1CA

[–]ValdraxNumbers, numbers, math-math-math. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, debatable. She has the body of a CL4P-TP unit, but her personality core is from a different line of robots that was discontinued sometime before BL1 when the ECHO-1 came out.

But fair enough.

[–]Rug-Boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The CL4P-TP unit you're thinking of is the same across 1, TPS, 2 and 3. There are heaps in 1 and heaps for almost the entire TPS main campaign (although you really only encounter a few, maybe 10-12 in total); then, as you saw at the start of 2, there's only the one (same one who became Interplanetary Ninja CL4P-TP in 1 and who is a playable character in TPS); and finally, in 3 there is only 1 until the Handsome Jackpot DLC. Only thing that's changed about Claptrap is the voice actor... personally, I preferred the original guy but oh well.

[–]eeeezypeezyI am the strongest girl alive!!! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same claptrap in 2, TPS and 3. In BL1 there are a bunch of claptrap units, the one that shows up in the sequels is the one that first greets you when you get off the bus at the beginning of the game.

I love that guy

[–]ValdraxNumbers, numbers, math-math-math. 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I think it's less the revolution which most people seem to have either forgotten, forgiven, or are unaware he was specifically the unit behind, and more the ill-will his entire product line had built up by being incompetent, insistent on foisting their services on you (often to your detriment due to said incompetence), and grating in personality, including being egotistical despite being incompetent.

The energy that Claptrap receives is somewhere on the level of a phone call about your car's extended warranty interrupting nothing important. Few people hate Claptrap when they're not interacting with him, but they won't sign up voluntarily to do so.

I will say that BL2 and TPS do a lot to make you sympathetic to his plight. BL3 undoes a lot of that by not giving him any sympathetic moments until his would-be robotic girlfriend dumps him the moment she gains free will.

Also, the little bastard drops a line about how you're a completely replaceable minion right before the final boss fight in a moment where the plot has reached its peak of not caring about anyone but the NPCs, and that felt a little like punching down.

When BL2 Claptrap tells you you're his minion. It's funny, because it's false. When BL3 Claptrap tells you you're just a recruit for someone else's show, it a lot less funny, because it's true.

[–]fretless_enigmathe duplicitousness of interpersonal relationships 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to see the alternate universe where that one Hyperion guy got to finish out his work on the Claptrap AI. How unstoppable could Hyperion have been if Claptrap units were properly functional?

[–]IIIGuntherIII 22 points23 points  (2 children)

It was BL1 that brought about the claptrap hatred. There are many claptraps in BL1 and a lot of them are annoying. None more than the ones that come on your echo every single time you enter an area to tell you that there are missions available at the bounty board

[–]raoulduke79 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Did you know there are missions available at the fyrestone bounty board?

Ill be back in 5mins to tell you again

[–]JP_32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look at me! Im dancing, Im DANCING!

[–]SexuaIRedditor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah it's kind of a running joke through the series. CL4P-TP is a good enough dude, especially with all the crazy you always find yourself surrounded by, he's just universally hated because it's funny.

Have you seen the movie The Big Lebowski? He's like Donny

[–]RetroGecko3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

nah I love him, but its also fun to hate him haha, he's such a bastard. in 1, 2 and TPS he's great. Really not a fan in 3 with the va change and writing quality but that's expected.

[–]Ryuuji_92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Claptrap is just annoying, that's why people don't like him. Claptrap is also just a dick, remember when we got his eye back and Sir Hammerlock put it back. "Minion! Now I've got my eyesight back -- and you're far uglier than I remembered! Time to join up with the Crimson Raiders in Sanctuary! This glacier’s full of nothing but murderers or jerkbags, like that Hammerlock dude!" For most of the main characters at sanctuary they have spent more than enough time with him and he's like an annoying talking dog that tries to mate with any robotic type thing he can. For us he's suppose to be comedic relief, sometimes it works and other times he's just annoying.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I mean I didn't see any of you at his pizza party 🤔

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (playing as Salvador ) shot everyone who said no to claptrap birthday 's foot and gave claptrap a double high five !!!

[–]x3mcj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

on my side, I do love clptrp, for what he is, annoying as fuck, but thats what iI love about him, and how everyone else treat him

I must say that, rovorevolution its one of my favorite DLC for BL1, and the boss on the garbage dumpster on jack's casinno, its a boss iI like to rushRush every now and thenthe on bl3, and the fact that there's a glitch we can use to farm it, its even better

Also, you should try claptrastic voyage, the only dlc for TPS. Getting to know how did clptrp ended on the same rocket as the rest it pure awesomes

[–]beastlycircle 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The claptastic voyage dlc explained why he is hated so much by the community in the game. But my favorite was in the presequel when trying to choose to play as claptrap the game keeps questioning to make sure that you really want to play as claptrap

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how Jack in TPS doesn't look at the character you play as till your character introduces ( if I remember correctly) especially when his clp-trp died and then I played as CLAPTRAP he was like AWESOME ,THANK YOU to YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME . worst.day. EVER

[–]TaSManiaC88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In bl1 he wouldn't shut up if you had side missions available somewhere and it got old REALLY quickly..

[–]ultratunamanpsst Adassbay over Erethey! 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My favorite character to play in TPS. Hilarious in Tales. The only hate I have is for the voice actor change in BL3.

But I think we all know Randy had a hand in that nonsense.

[–]CanuckInATruck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the fact that they ask repeatedly if you wanna play as Claptrap when you select him. My SO used him for our co-op playthrough.

[–]maquibut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes

[–]Biffingston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always liked him.

[–]crispysalad222 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Claptrap is awesome that’s why there’s an Easter egg of him in GTA 5

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

WHAT WHERE??

[–]crispysalad222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the docks there’s crates that have the same paint job as claptrap.

[–]mamasonerdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is by far my favorite character in the games

[–]ONESNZER0S 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've never understood the hate. Claptrap has always made me laugh. I even played as Claptrap in TPS.

[–]LowCommunication3359[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Haha , remember how in the intro jack doesn't pay attention to the character and if you pick claptrap he notices you and says " WORST DAY EVER " 😂😂

[–]ONESNZER0S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot about that. It's been a while since I was playing it. LOL

[–]Skindog_Dougles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you ever hate claptrap

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion - he is heavily neurodivergent coded, and I wish bl3 didn't just loop right back to him being a butt monkey

[–]StarHorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joke is that he is ahated.

[–]Asphyxiety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a normal annoyance towards claptrap, but that mission in BL3, where you go into a den or whatever with thousands of claptraps...I wanted to scream

[–]Sion_forgeblast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a reason, but its also a bit of a spoiler for The Pre-sequel....

[–]x138x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people who hate claptrap solely hate him for having to gather 367 claptrap parts in the Robo Revolution and then getting nothing, and to a lesser extent the explodo-traps in the Knoxxtrap fight

[–]Adarapxam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres a claptrap thats in jail in the Knox DLC thats a pedophile https://youtu.be/MR9PWaWVKJA?si=IxtsddcHzDIUmric

[–]sinjinerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved him in one and two, he was such a lovable schmo. I hated him three because he was mean.

[–]Tiny_Breadwinner[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Randy deliberately sabotaging his character after the VA firing after 2 probably had something to do with that.

[–]PeopleEatingBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's annoying but that's exactly what the creators intended. But I like him and also feel sorry for him.

[–]exoventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of 3, I honestly like Cl4trap. And genuinely feel bad for how poorly he gets treated.>! As much as I hate Eva, the moment that Cl4ptrap actually had someone that remotely respected him made me smile. The first time I think I actually heard cl4ptrap actually be happy about something.!< Think Cl4ptrap's hate is overdone at this point. I would love to see a small character arc for cl4ptrap. Just to make him a bit more mature, all I ask.

[–]T1meTRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated Clappy because of how annoying his was... until I played his DLC in TPS, it made me feel for him to some degree, still an annoying voice, but a nice character
